OHFA'S OHIO HEROES PROGRAM GIVES 1,000 HOMEBUYERS SOMETHING TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR
COLUMBUS — Many Ohioans have more to be thankful for this year with the help of the Ohio Heroes Program from the
Ohio Housing Finance Agency (OHFA). This week the Agency achieved a major milestone with the closing of the 1,000th mortgage loan from the program since it began March 3, 2008.
“These professionals work hard in critical jobs daily to make a difference in our lives, and this program provides an extra incentive to help them move into their dream home,” said Doug Garver, Executive Director for the Agency. “We are pleased to have been able to help 1,000 families secure safe, affordable housing despite the challenges the housing industry has faced this year.”
Ohio Heroes offers a 30-year fixed mortgage to first-time homebuyers who are active military personnel or military veterans, firefighters or emergency medical technicians-paramedics, healthcare workers, police officers or teachers. The borrowers must be full-time professionals and meet OHFA’s First-Time Homebuyer Program standard mortgage guidelines. The mortgage is offered at a quarter of a percent under OHFA’s rate for the First-Time Homebuyer Program. In addition, a federal exemption allows veterans who may have owned a home in the past three years to qualify under the First-Time Homebuyer Program.
OHFA utilizes federal and state resources to provide housing opportunities for families and individuals through programs designed to create, preserve, and manage affordable housing throughout the State of Ohio. The Agency is a self-supporting quasi-public agency governed by an eleven-member board, nine of whom are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. Two additional seats on the board, by statute, are reserved for the Director of Development and the Director of Commerce, or their designees, and both serve as ex officio voting members.
