Before the Civil War, local support for ending slavery and Ohio's unique location made it the heart of the Underground Railroad. In fact, research suggests that most of the African Americans escaping slavery along these secret routes came through Ohio. Although there's no complete record of "stations" or safe houses, historians estimate that hundreds of Ohio homes offered freedom seekers a place to rest on their way north. Most of those homes still standing are private residences, but several are open to public. In honor of Juneteenth, we've mapped all 14 of Ohio's Underground Railroad house museums that you can explore.
